Don’t count out old Sugarhouse just yet*

Posted: March 19th, 2008 | Author: Nathan Blair | Filed under: Sugarhouse Utah, Utah cities | Tags: , , | No Comments »

In the not so distant future, you may be able to buy real estate in the heart of Sugarhouse, Utah, on the top floors of one of two seven story buildings.

The mention of two seven story buildings sitting on the corner of Highland Drive and 2100 South will undoubtedly make many people cringe, but they will soon be reality.

Demolition of the granite block is currently under way. When completed, the above mentioned corner will be home to a new mix of office, commercial and residential space. A few of the corner’s previous tenants will be back, but many have decided not return since it was announced that rents would not stay at the same low rate that they were at before.

I don’t know quite what to make of this new development yet. I’ve only seen artist’s renderings of what it will look like, but from what I can tell, the corner will look just like any other new corner in Salt Lake City. I hope I’m wrong, and the man in charge has said that he will keep the old Sugarhouse feel, but I’ll have to see the finished product to make my final judgment.

Aspen, Utah?*

Posted: March 19th, 2008 | Author: Nathan Blair | Filed under: Utah Ski resorts, Utah cities | Tags: , , , | 2 Comments »

It looks like Utah might get another town and ski resort at the same time. A real estate developer named Dean Sellers has just submitted incorporation papers for a brand new Utah town called Aspen.

According to Sellers, Aspen would have a ski resort comparable in quality to Deer Valley, a golf course, high end retail and commercial develpments, and some residential living as well. It sounds like the idea is to make it as ritzy as possible to attract as much money as possible. You can bet that many people will have strong opinions about that.

In fact, I looked at most of the comments written in response to an article on this topic in the Deseret News, and judging from that, opposition is strong among Heber locals. Those who commented may just be the vocal ones for all I know, but they were very vocal. Then again, there were lots of comments from people who welcome the idea, saying that anything that brings tax money into the state is only a good thing. I agree that that would be a plus. This Aspen plan would surely bring in a load of out of state dollars.

Keep your eye on this one, although it may be some 25 years before the city is fully built out.

Variety of homes in Cedar Hills, Utah*

Posted: March 18th, 2008 | Author: Nathan Blair | Filed under: Cedar Hills Utah, Utah cities | Tags: , , | No Comments »

I’ve written before about communities that make an impact on me for one reason or another, and this time it’s Cedar Hill, Utah.

I was there yesterday showing homes to a nice couple, and and I had a chance beforehand to look around a little. The thing I love the most about this community is how it is nestled up against the mountains, offering spectacular views of Utah valley. I like the mountain views just as much, so it’s a double plus for me. Utah Lake glistens under the sunset, creating a magical feeling at dusk. I love the summer view, but I’m also a winter lover so I can only imagine how neat it would be when the mountain backdrop is covered in white. It would be the kind of scenery that would make you never want to leave your window and a good fire.

In Cedar Hills, there are starter homes and million dollar homes, so check it out if you’re in the market.

Saratoga Springs in Utah County offers a sort of small town feel

Posted: March 18th, 2008 | Author: Nathan Blair | Filed under: Saratoga Springs Utah, Utah cities | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

If any of you are familiar with northern Utah county, you will know that home sales in Saratoga Springs have slowed a bit. Well, big surprise, but allow me to put in a plug for this community. I hope this won’t seem like a typical “live in Utah” post, because I really am familiar with Saratoga Springs and I think it has something to offer.

My sister just moved to the Stillwater neighborhood there, and the first thing that would make someone want to follow is the stunning view of Utah lake. Mind you, this is not the same lake as seen from Provo. Literally it is of course, but it actually looks nice from the west shores. Those buyers getting in early are building with large windows on the east side of their homes so as to allow the beauty to come through in living color.

If you like living close to recreational spots, this is also a plus for Saratoga Springs. Water sports and mountain trails are within minutes. In Stillwater, you can ride up the mountain side on your four wheelers and it’s as if you’ve left northern Utah.

If a smaller town feel isn’t for you, then you might be better off in Salt Lake, but many people enjoy the feel of Saratoga Springs and it’s neighboring Lehi just because it isn’t Salt Lake. Again this is a matter of opinion, but farms still abound in the area. And if you’ve heard it’s too far out there, well I’d say to give the drive a try. It really isn’t that bad.
