The Deseret News showed that it has indeed happened, due mostly to construction industry layoffs.

Yet amid the gloom, companies like Sephora are deciding that Utah is the place for them. Sephora, a cosmetics distribution company, is bringing a distribution center to Salt Lake’s west side. With that center will come 500 available jobs.

This is one of the reason that I think it is unwise to overreact at the reports of sliding Utah employment growth. Like the article above said, construction jobs have suffered as a result of the slowing housing market – Utah’s job economy as a whole is still doing alright. When home prices fall to more affordable levels, some of those construction jobs will come back. It’s not as if that is an indicator that you better worry about your job. The numbers might not even slide back up this year, but it’s not panic time.

I’m just glad that large companies are still finding Utah an attractive location for their business. Our central geographic location won’t change anytime soon, and we still have people coming in who need jobs. I don’t care so much that these new jobs will be lower paying – they are still jobs and they will be taken.
