What is the big orange icon all about?

cd9a60be c60a 4ca1 a6c0 c1b0dfe633a What is the big orange icon all about?Look to your right (or left). See that big orange and white icon? Do you know what it is or what it does? In the last few months, I’ve enjoyed this icon so much that I think you should know what it can do for you.

If you’re like me, you know that there is an overwhelming amount of good information on the internet, but you can’ t possibly remember all the good sites or blogs you been to in order to go back and visit them frequently. You could add a webpage as a bookmark, but then the hassle is having to go into your bookmark list everyday to find what you are looking for.

The big orange icon fixes this. If you see one on a website or a blog, it means that the site has an RSS feed. Don’t worry so much about what RSS means – in simple terms it means that if you click on that icon, you can have all the new information from that site delivered directly to your Google Reader inbox or a number of any other reader services out there.

Just like the daily newspaper being delivered to your front door, the orange icon is the internet’s paperboy.

First you have to sign up with Google Reader at reader.google.com. The term reader is self explanatory – google is reading your favorite pages and delivering the newest content from those sites to your inbox. Once you’ve signed up, just surf the net and watch for all the sites that have the icon on them. Most will say ’subscribe to this blog’, or’ subcribe in a reader’. Just click on the icon and you’re done.

This makes surfing the web SO much easier because you only read what matters to you. For readers of this blog, the good news it that a large number of real estate websites and blogs have RSS feeds. All you need to do is pick your favorites and sign up.

Happy reading.
